GXS™ PMDM Launches Product Information Manager Food Service Edition

Sunbury, United Kingdom — May 4, 2010 The Product Master Data Management (PMDM) Business Unit of GXS today announced a new product offering for the food service industry: Product Information Manager (PIM) Food Service Edition. PIM Food Service Edition is designed for food service suppliers that need a solution to centrally manage their product data and publish information adhering to industry standards. PIM Food Service Edition is fully compliant with the Foodservice GS1 U.S. Standards Initiative and includes the Global Data Synchronisation Network (GDSN) Core Trade Item Attribute Pack and the Food and Beverage Attribute Pack. These features provide suppliers with everything they need to synchronise product data with trading partners quickly and easily.

GXS PIM Food Service Edition enables businesses to:
respond quickly to customer and regulatory inquiries regarding the ethnic, locality, nutritional and dietary information about food products;
• centrally manage product formulation and product recipes;
• increase food safety and reduce product spoilage;
• reduce waste in transportation costs and warehouse space;
• disseminate corporate responsibility/sustainability/fair trade information quickly; and
• adhere to labeling and packaging requirements.

“There is no doubt that product data alignment is becoming higher on the priority list for companies of all types. But we noticed distinct needs within the food service industry. Consumers are demanding more and better information about the food they eat,” said Pat. Salmonese, vice president and general manager of GXS PMDM Business. “PIM Food Service Edition is a solution catered to the food service industry’s very specific and demanding needs for detailed, quality product data that must be consistent across all levels of an organisation and throughout the supply chain and manufacturing process. Several of our food service industry customers have recognised the value of this solution.”

An important feature of PIM Food Service Edition is its integration and alignment with enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems. Product data currently stored in ERP and other back-office systems can be easily leveraged by PIM Food Service Edition, protecting current investments. Importing this information into PIM and offloading the responsibilities of product data to a specialised system intended for such purposes, not only improves data quality, but also increases business agility.

According to Andrew White of Gartner1, “MDM of product data ensures consistency, accuracy, stewardship and accountability for the enterprise’s core product information, thus enabling the enterprise to avoid endless debates regarding ‘whose data is right.’ MDM of product data moves the enterprise closer to clean, semantically consistent reuse of information. A MDM of product data discipline helps enterprises break down operational barriers, enabling greater enterprise agility and simplifying integration activities.”

Available as a hosted solution or licensed software, GXS PIM solutions empower businesses of all sizes to manage product information and optimise product data synchronisation, effectively creating a ‘single version of the truth’ for all product data. Service offerings include PIM Food Service Edition, PIM Supplier Edition, PIM Retailer Edition and PIM Data Sync Edition. All are linked to the GDSN via a GS1-certified data pool that serves as a key enabler for the synchronisation of product information between trading partners around the world. With GXS’ PIM solutions, organisations can streamline business processes, reduce operating costs, increase product data accuracy and timeliness and enhance interoperability with global data pools.
