Sunbury, United Kingdom — February 14, 2007 — GXS™, a leading provider of business-to-business (B2B) e-commerce solutions, today announced the commercial availability of GXS Product Information Manager (PIM) 8.0. GXS PIM solutions are already in use by more than 50 retailers and suppliers. The new versions of GXS PIM meet demands to support product-related master data and internal data collabouration. Specifically, the new enhancements include business process management functionality to support greater visibility and control over workflow processes; management of master data associated with products or product categories; and improved flexibility for data sharing across internal channels and for collabouration with trading partners.
As part of an overall master data management (MDM) strategy, companies can use PIM 8.0’s capabilities to create a central repository for all product data and can consolidate, manage and publish product data across all internal systems and out to trading partners. This enables customers to optimise supply and demand chain operations, meet trading partner requirements and comply with global industry standards. Retailers are no longer satisfied with basic information about a product; they require detailed data to create interactive product displays, such as cooking demonstrations. They also want to ensure consumers are provided with detailed information about the product before they buy to reduce product returns. Examples of product master data include recipes, facilities or outlet locations, warranty information, material handling and disposal instructions, assembly instructions, measurements and product formulas.
Some of the enhancements to GXS PIM solutions include:
The ability to manage master data associated with products including traditional item attributes such as packaging, weights and logistical information, as well as extended attributes such as pricing, promotions, recipes, formulas, warranty and safety information;
Support for workflow reporting, monitoring and escalations to identify bottlenecks that result in costly delays to new product introductions and trade promotion rollouts;
Mass approval and update capabilities to save data entry time, in the event of regulatory changes, brand consolidation or merger activity;
New capabilities for data transformations and syndication to improve internal data alignment and collabouration with trading partners within or outside of the Global Data Synchronisation Network (GDSN); and
A new architecture that improves overall performance, reliability and scalability and facilitates interoperability with in-house systems through the use of web services.
These enhancements are available now and are the in process of being deployed by multiple retailers and suppliers.
“The market has evolved beyond the need to manage and collabourate on just base product information. Our PIM solutions have evolved to address new requirements and to provide our customers with greater extensibility in using GXS PIM solutions,” said Larry Rushing, director of product management at GXS. “These enhancements provide suppliers advanced product-based MDM capabilities to ensure they can meet retailer mandates for expanded usage of product information for in-store displays and other merchandising operations. For retailers, GXS PIM quickens speed-to-shelf for products and saves them the time and money associated with obtaining detailed product data.”
Available through a hosted subscription model or as licensed software, GXS PIM solutions empower businesses of all sizes to successfully execute internal data alignment; manage and monitor workflows; optimise external data synchronisation initiatives and manage master data associated with products. GXS PIM solutions can complement a company’s existing enterprise resource planning (ERP) and/or MDM solutions by creating a staging repository for product master data. For companies executing external data synchronisation initiatives, GXS PIM solutions are linked to the GDSN via a GS1-certified data pool.
According to industry analyst firm, Gartner1, “With the increasing importance of PIM and master data management (MDM), the responsibility for receiving, approving, managing, controlling and reporting data quality is moving to a more efficient, centralised place because its goals are common across all parts of the business, not just in selling or buying. E-commerce, multichannel integration and catalog systems are being integrated more frequently with PIM systems, acting as the main (and now single) source of product data.”
With GXS PIM solutions, organisations can streamline business processes, reduce operating costs, increase product data accuracy and improve collabouration with trading partners. Companies that leverage GXS PIM to automate business processes and create a single global repository of synchronised product information include AAFES, PepsiCo, Inc. and Piggly Wiggly.
