EAI (Enterprise Application Integration)

The integration of otherwise incompatible computer systems within an organization.


EAN International

Originally the European Article Numbering association, EAN International is the organization responsible for administering data standards for business, particularly in the areas of bar-coding and EDI, outside North America.


EAN.UCC

A term used to refer to activities carried out jointly by EAN and UCC, particularly in the area of standards development.


EAN.UCC Schemas

EAN.UCC Schema describes the structure of an XML document. The purpose of an XML Schema is to define the legal building blocks of an XML document, EAN.UCC schema design allows developers to supply information embedded within XML documentation.


ebXML

A set of XML standards designed to facilitate the exchange of messages between businesses.


ECR (Efficient Consumer Response)

An approach to supply chain management designed to ensure that the consumer receives the best possible service in store at the lowest possible cost to supplier and retailer.


ECR Europe

An organization created to promote efficient consumer response within Europe.


EDI (Electronic Data Interchange)

The electronic exchange of core business documents in accordance with published standards.


EIN (EAN.UCC Information Network)

Responding to the user demand for the development of a Global Data Synchronisation Network (GDSN), EAN International and the Uniform Code Council proposed the creation of an EAN.UCC Information Network. This network will be the foundation for the exchange of master data between partners of the global supply and demand chain. The components linked together through the EAN.UCC Information Network are the GEPIR databases, item data pools compliant with the EAN.UCC standards, and the GS1 Global Registry.


EPC (Electronic Product Code)

The code stored in an RFID tag which uniquely identifies a physical instance of a product.


EPCGlobal

The organization, set up by EAN and UCC, responsible for the development of RFID standards.


EPCGlobal Network

The network that manages RFID data.


EPCIS

EPC Information Service. A component of the EPCGlobal Network architecture that makes data related to an Electronic Product Code available to other applications.


eRoom

A secure, shared workspace for GSMP Groups on the Internet at http://eroom.uc-council.org/eRoom/facility/ you will be asked to enter your login and password that you can from the eRoom administrator


Extension

Extensions to core represent defined business processes which go beyond core requirements. Optional core data may be used in an extension but are not required. Example: US Grocery extension for Item, VAT.

GCI (Global Commerce Initiative)

A group of the world's largest supply and demand side companies whose aim is to encourage communication between trade organizations.


GDD (Global Data Dictionary)

The repository of definitions and attributes of all data elements used within the EAN¬UCC Business Message Standards. http://www1.ean-ucc.org/gdd/


GDS (Global Data Synchronisation)

A method defined by EAN.UCC for sharing data between suppliers and retailers.


GDSN TG (Global Data Synchronisation Network Task Group)

The Global Data Synchronisation Network Task Group has been created to update the existing EAN.UCC XML Standards for GDSN by reviewing current implementations and applying lessons learned to the Standards.


GDSN (Global Data Synchronisation Network)

The GDSN is an Internet-based, interconnected network of interoperable data pools and a Global Registry, the GS1 Global Registry, which enables companies around the world to exchange standardized and synchronized supply chain data with their trading partners.


GEPIR

The Global EAN.UCC Party Information Registry (GEPIR) has been in existence since 1999 and is operating in 69 countries providing a valuable service for companies to retrieve Global Company Prefixes, Global Location Numbers (GLN) and serial Shipping Container (SSCC) information

GIAI (Global Individual Asset Identifier)

The unique identification of an asset utilizing the EAN.UCC company prefix.


GLN (Global Location Number)

Unique location number mandatory within the Global Data Synchronisation process to identify data owners/info providers, etc such as Distributors, brokers, manufacturers. The GLN is a 13-digit numerical value used to uniquely identify physical locations or legal entities.


GLOBALregistry

The global registry is a key part of the Global Data Synchronisation Network which provides a data pool independent reference point for GTINs.


GPC (Global Product Classification)

An EAN.UCC System standard for the classification of products. GPC is a 'flat' classification system based on bricks, attributes and values. GPC is a mandatory element of the Global Data Synchronisation Network (GDSN).

GRAI (Global Returnable Asset Identifier)

The unique identification of a returnable asset utilizing the EAN.UCC company prefix.


GS1 (GS1)

Previously named EAN International (until next February 14-18 2005) Mission: Leading the design and implementation of Global Standards to improve the supply and demand chain. http://www.gs1.org


GS1 Global Registry

A directory for the registration of unique catalogue items and parties. It contains a limited data set certified to be EAN.UCC compliant and acts as a pointer to source data pools where master data is housed.


GS1 MOs (GS1 Member Organizations)

GS1-EAN International has 101 Member Organizations representing 103 countries. These organizations provide full support and information to their local member companies. Nearly one million member companies benefit from using the EAN.UCC system.


GSMP (Global Standard Management Process)

The Global Standards Management Process (GSMP) is the Global Process established in January 2002 by EAN International and the Uniform Code Council, Inc. (UCC) for the development and maintenance of Global Standards and Global Implementation Guidelines that are part of the EAN.UCC system.


GTIN (Global Trade Item Number)

A numerical value used to uniquely identify a trade item. A trade item is any trade item (trade item or service) upon which there is a need to retrieve pre-defined information and that may be priced, ordered, or invoiced at any point in any supply chain.
